Abstract:

The main concern of this paper (Part A) is not the documentation of performances of ancient Greek tragedy on American soil, but rather the examination of the sociocultural, political and local concerns that determined its trajectory, namely the impact of religion, the universities, the market and the philosophy of pragmatism and later on the coming of modernism, among others. It is the aim of this study to explore the struggle of Greek tragedy to find a place on the American theatre scene from late 18th century to the early 1960s; to show how the staging of tragedy gradually developed from an academic and “anti-American” engagement to a promising aesthetic and creative (postmodern) adventure.
