Abstract: 

This paper treats the expression ἄραρεν φρένας from Sophocles’ Electra 147, which in its association with the nightingale serves the poet as a means of articulating his authorial voice and his stylistic, generic and performative choices shaping his heroine by representing her gendered idiolect (lament).
